Philips introduced the Compact Cassette in Germany in 1963 it wasn't until Sony bought it was it mass produced for pre-recorded music and information. They were commercially around until the mid 90's but my car is still equipped and still jammin out to 38 special.
Compact discs had replaced cassettes by the early 2000s. As a matter of fact 2010 was the last year cassette players came standard in automobiles manufactured in the United States.
