The first cell phone was made by Bell labs in 1947, but the idea began in the 1920's with police radios. The invention of the cell is actually given to Dr. Martin Cooper of Motorola in 1974. The phones were for government use and it wasn't until 1984 that the first sale of cell phones was offered to the public. The early phones were large, heavy and copied land line phones in style. They were carried in a zippered bag with a large battery in the bottom. In 1991 the digital cell phone was introduced.
