The Egyptians back in the 14th century may have written about Heart Attacks and presumed they were a disease. In the BMJ (British Medical Journal) the detailed writings of Dr. Andrew Rae Gilchrist CBE denote the first true understanding of Heart disease in modern medical culture.

There is no proper record as to who discovered heart disease. Some of the ancient records reveal Egypt treated diseases with basic medical know-how. And an Egyptian could well be the first person who discovered heart disease and provided some medical remedy.

Edward Jenner.

From the book Medicine's 10 Greatest Discoveries, the authors state that Edward Jenner, who created the vaccine for smallpox, while doing an autopsy between 1783 and 1793 discovered coronary artery disease. Quoting form Jenner's letter:

"After having examined the more important parts of the heart, without finding anything by means of which I could account either for his sudden death or the symptoms preceding it, I was making a transverse section of the heart pretty near its base, when my knife struck against something so hard and gritty, as to notch it. I well remember looking up to the ceiling, which was old and crumbling, conceiving that some plaster had fallen down. But on further scrutiny the real cause appeared: the coronaries were becoming bony canals."

The first heart attack was discovered when the first autopsy was conducted and heart problems could be seen on the heart (infarction will create necrotic areas of the heart muscle). As I remember my medical history, the Greeks were the first to document heart problems when they conducted autopsies. They were pioneers in autopsies and studying and naming human systems. You can check with your local librarian for medical history books to check on my information. The New York Public Library has a phone line to answer details like this too and it is an 800 number or your local medical university library.
