The first shot of World War I by the U.S. was fired in Puerto Rico on the 21st of March 1915, ordered by a Puerto Rican serving in the U.S. Army, Lieutenant Teofilo Marxuach. Lt. Marxuach was officer of the day at El Morro Castle, at the entrance to San Juan Bay. An armed supply ship for German submarines in the Atlantic, the Odenwald, tried to force its way out of the bay. Lieutenant Marxuach ordered his men to open fire from the walls of the fortress and forced the ship to return to port and be interned. http://www.houseofpuertorico.com/articles/PR-A_Commonwealth.htm
The first shots fired in both world wars was from Point Nepean gun batteries in Melbourne Australia. In World War 1 a unidentified German merchant ship tried to slip out of the harbour but was challenged and refused to respond, 1 shot was fired across her bow and she surrended and was impounded, a similar evnt occured at the start of WW2. Both of these guns are now on display at point nepean.
Actually, the Point Nepean shot in WWi was the first allied shot to be fired in the FAR EAST. The first allied shot of WW1 was fired by a Frenchman on 2 August. A larger exchange of fire was initiated by the Belgian army (an ally) defending the German crossing of the Meuse River between 10am and 1am on 4 August.
The last fighting of the first world war took place at Mons on November 11th 1918. A Canadian soldier named James Price is generally regarded as the last casualty of the war, having been killed minutes before the armistice took effect.
Even though the above was the last shot before armistice, the fighting carried on, as it took time to get the info to all the units. It is thought that Nov 13th was when the last shot was fired.
There is no way to determine that fact.
I've heard that claim and I served as a lieutenant in that battalion. Best, Capt. (Ret.) Edward E. Menges
