Gas chambers are used for suffocating, poisining, and killling the Jews. it only took on hour to kill them. some were on the backs of trucks and some looked like showers. they used them to quickly kill large numbers of jews.

Typically, the condemned where escorted to the chamber, often in chains. He was placed in the chair in the center of the chamber, where he was strapped in: arms, legs, and typically a harness over his head. Sometimes his head was covered by a cloth or a bag. The chamber was then closed and sealed. The executioner, at the appointed time, pulled a lever that dropped several cyanide tablets into a solution of sulfuric acid he had previously prepared. This released cyanide fumes into the chamber, suffocating the condemned person.

Short answer is: In the spring of 1943. Answer to why: Himmler ordered this to be the way after watching the execution of Jews and getting sprayed with blood.He was sickened at the sight he then decided this was to messy and the gas chambers came into existence
