Why was the story of Noah and the Ark written?

We do not rally know why the story of Noah was told. There are probably multiple origins to the story, and multiple reasons for it. The story of the rainbow is reminiscent of animist myths, such as those found in the Australian Dreamtime stories, to explain how things came to be. Ian Wilson (Before the Flood) believes that it is partly based on folk memories of a real, catastrophic event, when the rising sea levels at the end of the Ice Ages caused the Mediterranean Sea to breach the Bosphorus and flood the fertile, low-lying plain that became the Black Sea.

The biblical story of Noah's Ark actually has two, slightly different stories woven together to appear to be one complex and slightly confusing story. The first of these was written by the Yahwist source, who lived around 800-900 BCE, while the second story was written by the Priestly source, who probably lived during the sixth century BCE*.

The stories of Noah's Ark have much in common with the story of the great flood in the much older Epic of Gilgamesh, as well as several other Near Eastern epics. However, it was probably not a copy of the Epic of Gilgamesh, but rather they probably had a more ancient common source, written long before the time of the Hebrew people. Ian Wilson (Before the Flood) believes that there once was a great flood that to its survivors must have seemed like a world-wide event sent by the gods. This occurred in 5600 BCE, when the Mediterranean Sea broke through the narrow Bosporus land-bridge and inundated the lush farmland where the Black Sea now lies. Epic stories of this event and its survivors would have been passed on orally until the development of writing at least one thousand years later, when the legend predecessor to Noah's Ark was committed to writing.

The story of Noah's Ark must have been handed down by word of mouth for many generations before it was written down in The Bible. There are two, somewhat different stories of the Flood in the Bible, that differ in details such as how many of each species were taken onto the Ark and how long the Flood lasted.

The first version is attributed to an anonymous source now known as the Yahwist. This is in Genesis 6:5-8, 7:1-5, 7:7, 7:10, 7:12, 7:16b-17, 7:22-23, 8:2b-3a, 8:6, 8:8-12, 8:13b, 8:20-22.

The second version, attributed to the Priestly source, consists of Genesis 6:9-22, 7:6, 7:8-9, 7:11, 7:13-16a, 7:18-21, 7:24, 8:1-2a, 8:3b-5, 8:7, 8:13a, 8:14-19, 9:1-17. When read in each sequence alone, we find two separate, self-contained and easily read accounts of the Flood:

Tradition states that Moses wrote a scroll containing the narratives of Genesis, at God's command, before the formal Giving of the Torah (Rashi commentary, Exodus ch.24). It was this scroll which he read to the Israelites (Exodus 24:7) as an introduction to what God's covenant would entail. These narratives were not unknown to the Israelites, since they had carefully preserved the traditions of the events of the lives of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob (see Midrash, Shemot Rabbah 5:18 and 22).
The words of this scroll were soon incorporated in the complete Torah itself by God, including the ancient traditions of the Creation, the Flood etc. (These traditions had been known by mankind worldwide, except that among the other nations [the idolaters] they had become garbled with idolatrous drivel.)
No Hebrew copy of the Torah has ever been found to differ with the others, worldwide. The Torah we possess today contains the exact wording written by Moses.
