Radar was invented early in WW2. After discovering Radar they observed that birds getting too close to the transmitter were cooked. That property of radar was not implemented for a while because it was so expensive to create the electronics and because the electronics were so large. As transistors have taken over the industry, microwaves became small enough that they were affordable. Microwaves have always been around since right after the Big Bang. Microwaves are "higher frequency" electromagnetic energy like the kind used in radar. Radar (though in primitive form) was demonstrated over a hundred years ago. It was developed to the point where it was using microwaves frequencies in the 1930's. As regards the appliance by that name, here's something right out of the Wikipedia article on microwave ovens: "Cooking food with microwaves was discovered by Percy Spencer while building magnetrons for radar sets at Raytheon. He was working on an active radar set when he noticed a strange sensation, and saw that a peanut chocolate bar he had in his pocket started to melt. Although he was not the first to notice this phenomenon, as the holder of 120 patents, Spencer was no stranger to discovery and experiment, and realized what was happening. The radar had melted his candy bar with microwaves. The first food to be deliberately cooked with microwaves was popcorn, and the second was an egg, which exploded in the face of one of the experimenters." The first patent was filed in '45 by Spencer and in '47, the first oven, the Radarange, was out. Early machines were only about a third as efficient as the contemporary ones. They cost a mint, too. Development continued until the "modern" unit rolled out in the '60's. Modern manufacturing methods made the unit cheaper, at it took off. The rest is history. Interestingly, the heart and soul of the microwave oven is the magnetron. The magnetron is the microwave generating electronic component in the oven. And it is actually a specialized form of vacuum tube; it's not a transistor or a solid state device at all. A perfectly good microwave oven can be set up using only the magnetron and four electrical components, none of which would ever be considered "modern" by today's standards. Microwave ovens were invented after World War II (1947) by a man named Dr. Percy Spencer. He used the radar technology that was created during the war to develop the oven. The first ovens were for commercial use only. It was not until 1955 that a microwave for a home was introduced.

MICROWAVES

Microwaves are electromagnetic waves with wavelengths from 1 mm to 1 m. The existence of electromagnetic waves was predicted in 1864 by James Maxwell. Hertz was the first person to demonstrate the existence of electromagnetic waves in 1888. In 1894, Bose demonstrated the use of high frequency waves by generating microwaves to explode gunpowder and ring a bell at a distance.

Various uses for microwaves have been developed since then, including communication systems, radar systems, speed limit enforcement, medical imaging, cooking, and weaponry.

MICROWAVE OVENS

The patent for the first microwave oven was filed on October 8th, 1945. The idea came as a result of radar/magnetron waves melting a chocolate bar in the pocket of Percy Spencer, an engineer working for Raytheon. The company began selling the first commercial microwave oven, the "Radarange," in 1947.

MICROWAVES FROM OUTER SPACE

However, all of mankind's discoveries and inventions regarding microwaves pale into insignificence when one considers that microwaves are bombarding us from the sun and the universe on a daily basis! [cosmic background microwave radiation] And they have been doing so for countless eons! So microwaves were invented, um, ...a very long time ago!

Well my good sir/madam if you are talking about the actual microwave itself, then its been around since the beginning of time. Or if you talking about the Microwave oven then let me give you a little history lesson on it. Cooking food with microwaves was discovered accidentally in the 1940's. Percy Spencer, a self-taught engineer, was building magnetrons for radar sets with the company Raytheon. He was working on an active radar set when he noticed that a peanut chocolate bar he had in his pocket started to melt. The radar had melted his candy bar with microwaves. The first food to be deliberately cooked with Spencer's microwave was popcorn, and the second was an egg, which exploded in the face of one of the experimenters

I am assuming you want to know how the microwave oven was developed?

In the 1930's research into powerful Radar transmitters led English scientists working at Manchester University to develop a new type of thermionic valve or 'Tube' called the 'Cavity Magnetron'. This valve was made of a strong steel casing and able to withstand a high vacuum and large increases in temperature. Internally it resembles a metal die for cutting threads on a steel rod, having 4 lobes like a clover plant.

A heater wire within was made to glow and a very high voltage DC applied between anode and cathode. A waveguide aperture allowed the oscillations within the valve to escape and the frequency was measured using an aerial probe wired to a car headlamp bulb. To their delight the magnetron caused the bulb to light and dim as it was moved down the waveguide. The interval between two dimming points of the bulb was measured at approximately 3 cm. Microwaves were being produced for the first time with large radiating power.

Very quickly the system was developed into a ground and airborne radar system which greatly assisted the fighting in WW2.

It was also quickly noticed that a hand placed over the waveguide produced intense heating. The English scientist James Lovelock ( worked on NASA Viking probe ) was first to toast his Sandwiches using the Magnetron.

When he approached his superiors in the UK government that this could form the basis of a high efficiency cooker he was turned down.

Raytheon, a large US company, was offered the design idea and they developed the first home cooker in the USA soon after the war. The rotating food plate to ensure even cooking was patented in Europe during the 1970's.
