The U.S. Air Force itself was formed in 1947, making it the youngest U.S. military branch. Women were allowed to join one year later, in 1948, with the creation of the program, Women in the Air Force (WAF).
Before this, women had already been serving in the Army, under the Women's Army Corps (WAC), which was formed in 1942. During the Air Force's first year, before the creation of WAF, some women from WAC performed Air Force duties while still serving in the Army.
