The stone or square keep castle was built as a natural extension to the motte and bailey, only because the motte and bailey had lots of weakness like:

  • sets on fire easily
  • rots quickly
  • isn't very warm
  • doesn't have very good defense

the only down side was that if the enemy if they dug under ground and got to one of the towers could easily pull out a brick and top pal over the tower itself.
