Iceland is a candidate for joining the European Union so it does not have a very long way to go. All that is left is negotiations and talks to allow Iceland to accede. Once Iceland is given the go ahead to accede, however, it could take more than a year to officially join, so Iceland will probably not be in the EU for 2-5 years.
Iceland will not be part of the European Union any time soon unless Iceland has another dramatic change in policy. Iceland submitted its candidacy to the European Union because it was having serious financial problems and wanted the assistance of the EU member-bloc. However, Iceland scrambled out of the hole before accession agreements had been properly signed, and so the Icelandic people were no longer interested in EU membership. As a result, the EU and Iceland have mutually frozen accession talks until Iceland changes its mind. Most Icelandic people oppose joining the European Union since there are EU-wide limits on fishery size based on countries which would substantially cut down the amount of fishers that Iceland is allowed to put out. (This is the same issue that Norway has in joining the European Union.)
