There are two primary considerations:
- The image is for the web or computer display, rather than printing
- The image is mostly sharp edges - text, graphs, buttons etc.
If you have a sharp-edged image for computer display, PNG is a more recent and normally better alternative than GIF. But there are cases where you would still prefer GIF:
- For simple animation - a few still images displayed in sequence
- When dealing with someone who needs GIF for historical reasons (ex. their image processing can't handle PNG properly)
