∙ 14y agoThe deepest man-made hole in the Earth is located in the Kola Peninsula in northwestern Russia. The depth achieved from the surface was 12,262 meters, roughly 7.5 miles. The 9" bore hole was created by a rotating bit spun by the pumping of drilling mud. Unexpectedly high temperatures caused the stoppage of the drilling in 1994, 24 years after drilling was started. The goal of the Russians was to drill to the Moho, the boundary between the crust and the mantle, but the goal was not reached.

∙ 9y agoThe Kola Superdeep Borehole is a man made hole that is the deepest on earth. In 2007 it reached a depth of 40,230 feet or 12,262 meters. It is located in Russia on the Kola Peninsula.
