Modern graffiti art originated on the streets of New York City. Artists strove to create better pieces, refining their techniques and use of spray paint to turn what was once a marker of territory into a true art form. Graffiti art has been recognized in the fine art world since the first graffiti-centered gallery opened in Rome in 1979. This exhibition introduced New York's underground scene to the world, and today graffiti artists are some of the most popular on the pop-art scene. Toys and clothing by Kaws and Phetus continually sell out, and exhibits by Elite Gudz and Banksy are talked about in the pop art and graffiti art scenes.

Answer:

The streets of ancient Rome (2,000 years ago) were home to much the same graffiti as today's cities (a phallus accompanied by the text, 'mansueta tene': "Handle with care"). If you limit your definition of graffiti to "drawings or words written on city walls" then this is a reasonable date. Even Mayan walls have inscriptions added to them. However drawings on the walls of caves from 30,000 years ago often exhibit over endowed men and beautiful (by the standards of the time) women and may well be the ancestors of today's tags.

Who is graffiti limbo about?

The songwriter, Michelle Shocked, says the song is specifically about Michael Stewart. Michael was a young graffiti artist who was arrested while writing. While under arrest, in the presence of eleven transit cops, Michael Stewart was strangled to death. When his case was heard by the Grand Jury not one cop was found guilty. Most of the lyrics in graffiti limbo are about the struggle all graffiti artists in NYC have had with police and city government. Former Mayer Ed Koch is famous for his crackdown on graffiti. Transit police began to fine and arrest anyone who painted graffiti for any purpose, and with the Clean Car Program of 1984 graffiti became the primary focus of the Vandal Squad. Although the squad boasts ending the graffiti problem of the subway system, the graffiti art movement has thrived since the 1980's. Graffiti will always be a part of street art, while moving to the worlds of fine art, clothing, comics, and design from companies like American Graffiti Graphics and Elite Gudz.

What are peoples opinions about graffiti?

I think that graffiti is art and not a crime that would promote greater criminal activity. But it all depends on the place. If the government where to allow graffiti but in areas such as an abandon train tunnels or something along those lines then, it could stop more vandalism, as in "tags" which on my opinion isn't art.

What is the difference between graffiti and graffiti art?

graffiti takes its name from Latin *graphīre to write . There are so many forms of it that just saying it is all graffiti is almost the same as saying any form of music is just noise. Is graffiti art? i would argue that by its definition it is. As far as saying one is breaking the law and the other is artwork , i believe that falls upon local laws not in the name itself. All forms of graffiti are forms of expression and that is by definition art . so your answer is no there is no difference between graffiti and graffiti art

Why is graffiti vandalisim?

Graffiti is only vandalism when it is created without commission on private property or in public places where it is not a protected art form. Many cities have laws that protect graffiti in certain places, like Venice Beach and 5Pointz in Queens. Graffiti art itself is not vandalism and is not illegal. There have been several well-known gallery shows featuring graffiti around the world, design houses like Elite Gudz that expand on art form to include fine art and comics, and books that showcase and analyze public street art, and books like The Faith of Graffiti that focus on pieces and graffiti art theory.

Do you consider graffiti an art form Why or why not?

That depends. Some graffiti (e.g. Sheperd Fairey, Banksy) is meant to be art, and it can definitely be considered art. But a person's nickname in bubble letters on the side of a building is not art at all. yes it is quit hating.
