Whitney Houston was the daughter of John Russell Houston Jr. and Emily Cissy Drinkard Houston. Her parents were married in 1959, and Whitney was born in 1963. But the marriage did not work out, and they got divorced when Whitney was still in kindergarten. (Whitney remained in contact with her dad, who ultimately re-married and had a daughter with his new wife.) John Houston died in 2003.

Whitney's mother is a respected, award winning soul and gospel singer. She started her career as Cissy Drinkard. But she became known as Cissy Houston with her second marriage. Mrs. Houston's most recent, major singing endeavor was in 2006. In that year, she recorded 'Family First' for the soundtrack of the film 'Daddy's Little Girls'. She performed the song with her daughter and with her niece, Dionne Warwick [b. December 12, 1940].

These days, Mrs. Houston is a happy mother and grandmother enjoying her children and grandchildren. She continues to be Minister of Music to the New Hope Baptist Church Youth Inspirational Choir in Newark, New Jersey. In 2004, the Church honored her for 50 years of service in the junior choir.
