Place pads upper right & lower left to ribs like an adult; if pads are too large, place on front & back. The pad icons will show where the pad is to be placed. See related link for pictures.

Depending on the size of the child, they can be placed same as an adult (upper right on chest & lower left on the rib cage) or if the child is smaller, you will need to place 1 pad on the chest and 1 on the back.

Well the pads would be placed in the same location as they would on an adult casualty, most AED units have pads designed just for children and come with complete quick reference placement instructions.

Keep in mind that the only differences are size and the state of charge for the size of the individual the AED is being used on. Trying to use adult pads on a child can be dangerous so be sure your unit has both sets of pads.

Practice with the AED you have access to is important, this ensures that should the need ever arise (hope it never happens) you will be confident with the application of the unit to preserve life.

You should not use child AED pads on an adult and likewise you should not use adult AED pads on a child.

Pad location is the same on an adult and child; a small child may need pad placement on the chest and back; the AED pad icons show pad placement.

See related limk.

The process of using the AED on a child is exactly the same as for an adult; except you need pediatric pads, which will deliver less energy to a child. A child is defined as less than 8 years old or less than 55 pounds.

For an adult, place the pads (on victim) upper right on chest and lower left side of abdomen on the ribs. For a child, the pads may need to be placed on the chest and back.
