Yes! They are legal to have as pets, but you cannot take them out of the wild. They must be purchased. They also do NOT require a special license unless you intend to breed or have a colony of them. 1 or 2 is just fine (not sure of the exact number)

Contact your local department of Conservation. There are many species of squirrels and the one you have may be endangered. You DO NOT want to get caught with that in your house- jail time and fines. You may also be required to get a license to have the animal kept in captivity.

I took in a Baby Chipmunk and I had to get a license to have one. Go to your States Fish and Game website and it should tell you. Mine didn't so I had to call in and they told me I had to get one. My Wildlife license will take 2 weeks to come in and I have just a few days left. I believe it is legal because many of the Flying squirrel breeders are located in California.
