The sun. Fossil fuels are made up of plants and animals that lived in the past and have been converted to fossil fuels by geological processes over time. And as plants convert the suns energy into sugars, fossil fuels are stored solar energy.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The energy comes from the energy that was previously in dead plants/animals... to understand better read about the carboniferous period. It explains how fossil fuels were created, through the compression of decaying plant material that had lots of locked up carbon underneath layers of sediments.

Solar Energy!
The Sun. All fossil fuels are generated from organic matter subjected to the proper conditions and geologic time. The sun supports all life forms that have ever lived on the earth since photosynthesis produced the plant matter which lies at the bottom of every food chain.

The sun.

Just about all the energy on our planet, including fossil fuel energy, originates with our sun. Other sources include are heat coming from below the Earth as in volcanoes and energy due to the rotation of the earth and tides from the moon (and the sun).

Fossil fuels come from fossilized biomass (plants and animals). Ultimately the energy to grow those plants and animals came from solar radiation (the Sun).

Do to the 1st law of thermodynamics, which says that energy is conserved; the energy in fossil fuels can be traced back as far as one can stand to contemplate.

  1. Let's begin with nuclear fusion. 4.5 billion years ago during the development of the sun hydrogen began fusing to create helium. This fusion released vast amounts of electromagnetic energy and would continue to do so too this day.
  2. The release of this energy set the stage for the development of life on planet earth. Initially primitive protobionts evolved into the first organisms and by the time 4 billion more years of this solar radiation endured life on earth was diverse including microorganisms, plants, and animals.
  3. Millions of years ago, certain plants and microorganisms called photoautotrophs harvested the solar radiation released by nuclear fusion. This energy was locked into the bonds of carbohydrates which were incorporated into the structure of the organisms. Subsequently the organisms died and over time were buried beneath the surface of the earth in conditions of high temperature and pressure. These conditions upgraded the dead organic material into fossil fuels.
  4. Today we search for these fuels so that we can release the energy that was originally collected from the nuclear fusion reactions in the sun millions of years ago.

Why is the sun the source of energy for fossil fuels?

Fossil fuels are produced by the slow alteration of masses of vegetation, compressed underground. That vegetation originally used the energy of sunlight to grow, therefore it is the sun's energy which is stored in chemical form, in fossil fuels.

Is kinetic energy stored by fossil fuels?

No. Fossil fuels store chemical energy. It is this chemical energy we tap by using them for fuels.

When fossil fuels are burned they release energy stored thousands of years ago?

When fossil fuels are burned, they release energy stored years ago.

The type of energy stored by fossil fuels is?

electromagnetic energy

What do thermal energy and fossil fuels have in common?

When fossil fuels are burned, some of the chemical energy stored in them is converted into thermal energy.

How can fossil fuels be used as an energy source?

fossil fuels can be used as an energy source to power all vehicles and most machinery

What energy source can you use instead of fossil fuels?

Fossil fuels are exhaustible. Electric energy is an alternative.

How do fossil fuels store energy?

Fossil fuels contain the chemical energy that plants and algae obtained from sunlight and then stored in sugars. Just as energy chemical energy is stored in sugars, chemical energy is stored in fossil fuels. All it takes to release it is enough heat and oxygen to cause the fuel to burn.

How did the energy get into fossil fuels?

Fossil fuels are made from plant and vegetable matter that died millions of years ago. The plants and vegetables got their energy from the main energy source around here - our sun. Essentially, fossil fuels can be regarded as stored energy from the sun. We use/release that energy again by burning the fuel.

What is the energy stored in fossil fuels such as coal?

Chemical potential energy

What is a a nonrenewable energy source?

Fossil fuels.

Is fossil fuels a renewable or non renewable?

Fossil fuels are a non-renewable energy source.
