Mid-ocean ridges are formed from the uplift of newly formed oceanic crust by rising magma. As the ridge is slowly pushed away from the source of the heat by the addition of newer crust, it sinks and is no longer part of the ridge, being replaced by new ridge material. This process means that the rock comprising the ridges is among the most recent in geologic age.

The ocean floor is constantly changing and forming through plate tectonics. There are extensive fissures along the ocean floor where the plates on either side are constantly spreading away from eachother as magma rises to the surface at the fissures. As these plates are pushed away from eachother at the fissure, the opposite ends of the plates are colliding with the shorelines in a process called "subduction", whereby the sea floor is essentially "dipping" under another plate. Note also that erosion and wind deposition is responsible for much of the fine silts and sediments found on the ocean floor, as well as freshwater rivers that carry sediments into the ocean.
