The HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) infects the body systemically. It is found in the bodily fluids of an infected person: Blood, sweat, tears, saliva, semen, vaginal fluid.

The virus is transmitted via these bodily fluids; it is most commonly transmitted through unprotected sexual contact, and less commonly through contaminated blood products (whole blood, plasma, factor VIII).

Modern screening has largely eliminated contamination through blood products, but there is still a small window during which a donor may be become infected and the infection becoming visible to screening.

The virus cannot be transmitted by touching an infected person unless the individual making contact has an open wound that is exposed to the bodily fluids of the infected person.

The HIV virus attacks the body's immune system by invading T-cells (immune cells that hunt and kill invading bacteria). The virus penetrates the cell's outer membrane and then the cell's nucleus. It uses the nucleus as a breeding ground in which to replicate itself. The compromised cell is eventually killed and the newly replicated HIV viruses disperse to infect other T-cells in which to continue the replication process.

Eventually, so many T-cells become compromised that they can no longer effectively combat incoming infections. This leads to AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome). A person can be infected with the HIV virus for anything up to 10 years before displaying symptoms.

Modern drugs can prevent an HIV positive individual from developing full blown AIDS, so whilst the disease is no longer the death sentence it once was (as long as the sufferer has access to treatment), it is currently considered incurable and there is no vaccine against the virus.

What is the inccubation for HIV?

The term incubation is not generally used in reference to HIV infection. However, there is a period of time when someone can be infected with the virus and test negative. The "window period" refers to the period of time between when someone is infected with HIV until they can test positive. The "window period" is anywhere between 28 and 90 days after infection. The "window period" occurs because the standard HIV tests detect anitbodies that occur as a result of HIV infection. Antibodies are not immediately detectable after infection.
