You could spend a lifetime studying clay and its uses. Clay is basically the stuff in dirt that is non-organic, and not sand and rocks. It is always associated with water, but dried-up lakes and streams are the best sources.

Clays used by Southwestern Anasazi is a mystery. A thousand years ago they made pottery just millimeters thick that survives today. Nobody (the legend goes) knows the source of this white clay.
