Unfortunately The North Face doesn't do any customizing. You can take it somewhere else to have it customized; just be aware that it would void the warranty on the backpack.

if you have a lot of books I suggest a North Face backpack. I carried on all through college and I had a tons of books and my back never ever hurt. Over the shoulder bags can really damage your shoulder and back and they are uncomfortable if they get too heavy. I backpack really evens out the weight. i totally agree.
