African Civets are not widely kept as pets in the States, however there are a few USDA licensed breeders of this species. The most widely available for a price, usually $900-$1200, is the palm civet. For anyone who has ever kept large or giant spotted genets, care, husbandry, and bonding is quite similar. In short, the civet has a personality somewhat akin to a North American raccoon but more similar to a genet. The most critical issue for would-be owners is to acquire one at a very young age. I have seen very young ones become very tame and personable, even coming when called. Althernatively, those that I have seen that have been kept outdoors or in garages have become pretty much living terrors. In general, expect to keep it in your house constantly or it will revert to being wild. Much like a skunk. Also, expect it to destroy your house. We live with a crow, a mynah bird, spotted skunk, two giant genets, and a civet, and the civet is by far the most destructive. For anyone that has owned a coati, I would consider the level of destruction tantamount. For those still interested, I would refer you to Animal Finder's Guide or Animal Marketplace magazines for breeders. We from time to time have young civets available. What is the scientific name for the civet cat?

The scientific name of the civet cat is dependent upon the genera and species of civet. There are many. Almost all civets are grouped beneath the family Viverridae with the African Palm Civet the lone member of the family Nandiniidae. Civets' genera and species names, however, are multiple. For example, the masked palm civet's binomial name is Paguma larvata while the binomial name of the African civet [not the African palm civet] is Civettictis civetta. If you need the scientific name of a specific species of civet cat, it is easy to look up civets and go from there.

What is a baby civet called?

Oddly enough, this was a difficult answer to find. I had to work backwards from what I thought it would be [and was correct, a baby civet is called a kitten]. On the other hand, the best information I found about baby civets called them just that: baby civets. I am going to link that wonderful page but I will also add that you now have what seems to be a professional choice, made by professionals in the field. You can call a baby civet a civet kitten or you can call it a baby civet. After seeing the linked page, I know what I would choose.
