Really, the term "inexpensive laptop" is relative You can buy a laptop for around $500 or $600 new if you want one but more likely than not in a few years it will end up dying on you. Acer probably has some of the cheapest laptops on the market but Dell has surpassed everyone in their laptop quality for the price area. You may have to pay a little more for a dell but in the end you will pay less and they have great customer assistance. For a laptop that really won't fail on you try an apple. Only problem is that they start at $999 and go up from there. They are also better for multimedia rather than Office work. They do have an office suite though it one is needed.
