Why don't you just check out a dentistry merit badge booklet from a. the library b. your meritbadge councler c. if your Mormon your church library d. your scout master.
As an eagle scout I'm simply going to tell you that it needs to be done by yourself with or without the help of you counselor.
yes but they do the requirements found in the merit badge book and then find a councler for that badge

Besides First Aid, which is required for Eagle, there is a Badge in Medicine. This requires spending time with a doctor so if you think you ant to be a surgeon you could try to find a counselor that is a surgeon.
If you are a Scout, you should start with the official BSA merit badge booklet for this particular badge (unfortunately, these are not available online). If you are actually working on the badge, your counselor should also be able to point you to more information.
