You can park at a private garage or on the street. But private garages are expensive, and if you park on the street, you have to watch out for no parking rules. Also, you have to find out whether alternate side parking rules are suspended or in effect for the day.

See the first four Related Links for information on driving and parking in New York City.

Parking is always a hassle in Manhattan, so if you are coming to New York on a train, plane or bus, don't bother renting a car unless you are planning on spending a lot of time in the outer boroughs (Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx and Staten Island). Public transportation is neither as convenient nor as extensive in the outer boroughs. If you are planning to spend most or all of your time in Manhattan, then just use the subways, buses and cabs.

Cabs are expensive, and most of the bus routes are confusing, and the buses are often so slow that you might as well just walk. The subway is really the only method of travel that is both cheap, fast and convenient.

See the fifth Related Link below for a complete New York City subway map. You can click on the stations to find out exactly which trains stop at a given station. Also, you can click on the individual line icons (for example, click on the orange B icon for the B train) to get more information on a particular train, namely, a complete list of the stations that each train stops at, and information on when the train runs.

If you need subway directions from one place to another, you can also ask a question here (for example, "Which train do you take from Penn Station to Rockefeller Center?" or "Which train do you take from 96th Street and Broadway to 11th Street and Avenue B?")
