American slaveholders did not travel to Africa, the majority of slaves were enslaved by their neighboring African tribes and sold to slave traders on the African coast.

European involvement was mostly in purchasing slaves available, not in creating new slaves.

To improve upon the above answer.

What is correct about the above answer is that slave holders did not travel to Africa. They bought slaves here in America from the Europeans who transported and kidnapped the Africans. DNA testing as well as history, will show that most people descended from African slaves are descended from West Africans along the coast, mainly Nigeria. So to say that they were brought there by other Africans is not correct. Also, it is known that the slaves that were brought from Central Africa were brought in shackles and taken to slave castles on the coast by Europeans. Europeans purchasing? That's definitely not history, but it is surely comical.
