He then returned to Hawaii to live with his grandparents, and attended Punahou School, an elite private school in Honolulu, beginning in grade five. After finishing high school there, he attended Occidental College (Los Angeles) for two years. He then went to Columbia University in New York and finished his Bachelor's degree there in 1983, in Political Science. He worked for five years, and then went to Harvard Law School, Cambridge MA, where he earned a JD (law degree) in 1991.
