Where did Boxing Day get its name from?

Boxing Day was the day when you gave your servants, delivery boys etc their gifts.

It is still a bit of a tradition to give a Christmas Box to your postman (mailman), refuse collector (although less often now we have kerbside collections), milkman (if you still have one, I do)and the young person who delivers the paper.

Also you may give your hairdresser, manicurist etc. a slightly larger tip at Christmas.

the term Christmas Box is now mainly used only in the north of England.

In Canada, the 26th of December is Boxing Day and it is a national holiday as is Christmas Day. This is now the day for " after Christmas day sales events " at the large stores, to reduce their inventories before the new year begins.
