Poe was left an orphan at the age of 3 and was adopted by a wealthy and childless merchant named John Allan. He lived in England from 1815-20. He went to the University of Virginia in 1826, but he dropped out of school and by 1827 was living in Boston and began writing. He enlisted in 1827 and rose to Sgt. major by 1829. In 1830 he was admitted to West Point, but was dismissed from there. By 1831 he had his 3 book of poems published and had moved to Baltimore.
