Islam originally started in Makkah (Mecca), a city in Saudi Arabia. In Islam the last prophet Muhammad preached it in Makkah. It was later on taken to another city called Medinah ( also in Saudi Arabia).

In order to answer this question effectively you need to consider that Islam is not merely a religion. It is a way of life. When considering where Islam started, consider the following:
There is a common link in terms of Prophets between Islam, Christianity and Judaism. The common factor you will find in all of these religions, is Allah(God). Islam does not disagree with alot of the historical facts that you will find. What the Christian faith regards as Adam, the first man, is regarded by Islam as Aadam(AS), the very first Prophet. Over time, God has sent down many Prophets, to guide people and teach them right from wrong and how to make the right decisions. Obviously, looking at people today, I'm sure you can understand why it was necessary for man to receive guidance.
Over the periods where these Prophets came into being, you will see a common message being taught by every one of them. Disregard what man himself has edited and changed to suit himself, look at the word of God as it was sent down to us, and you will notice that each Prophet came and carried on the teachings of previous Prophets.
The Quran states (Words of God) something to the effect that "Today I have completed your religion for you", which is indicative of a continuous message which has now been completed.
Basically, to sum up the answer to your question, Islam existed from the very first day that Man has existed.

In 610, Muhammad began receiving revelations. After 2 years, he began preaching and winning converts, initially among his family and friends in Mecca. Muhammad taught the Arabs no new doctrine about God and did not think he was founding a new faith, merely bringing the old faith to the people and instilling moral virtues. Nevertheless, it would be reasonable to state that Islam originated in Mecca.
