Where Jesus Died
He was crucified on a cross at Golgotha, or "Skull Hill," near Jerusalem. Another name for this hill, in another of the local languages, is Calvary.
Where Jesus Died
It would be good for those who are interested to research the idea that Jesus did not die on the cross, but was instead taken away to recover. Following the recovery, the story goes that he left the 2 tribes of Israel who'd he been trying to teach, and went to track down the other ten, who happened to be living in Kashmir, Afghanistan. Whether or not you choose to believe, there is in fact more actual evidence that Jesus went to Kashmir, and died there, than there is that he died on the cross. (True Christians, who believe that God preserved His Holy Word, consider the above story to be spurious & without any merit. Four Gospel accounts, early writings & historians tell of Joseph of Arimathea burying Jesus in his own tomb, which has never credibly been challenged.)
The Bible, however, notes two events that indicate Jesus had, indeed, died at the crucifixion. One is that the soldiers did not break his legs when they broke those of the other two being crucified next to him. Normally crucified criminals die a slow, agonizing death by asphyxiation, caused by the position of the arms and body; this death can take several days. In respect to a Sabbath beginning at sunset that day, the Romans decided to speed death by breaking the legs of the condemned; in this way, they could not push themselves up with their legs to catch a few short breaths of air. They determined Jesus had already died, so they did not break his legs.
The determination of how he died was the second event. They shoved a spear into his side, and out came "blood and water" (John 19:34). This showed, even then, that the heart had stopped, which caused the blood to separate into plasma and non-plasma parts. We now know that this doesn't happen immediately, therefore Jesus had died several hours previously.
Death would come naturally in crucifixion. However, in all four of the Gospels, it is recorded that Jesus died of his own volition at the end. John 19:30 states: "When Jesus therefore had received the wine [vinegar to cut thirst], He said, It is finished: and He bowed his head & gave up the Ghost."
Answer
Where was he crucified?
Matthew and Mark: At "a place called Golgotha, that is to say, a place of a skull" (Matt. xxvii, 33; Mark xv, 22).
Luke: At Calvary (xxiii, 33).
Calvary, like Golgotha, means a place of skulls in the vicinity of Jerusalem. The explanation given by Christian commentators is that "it was a spot where executions ordinarily took place, and therefore abounded in skulls." Fleetwood says it "was called Golgotha, or Place of Skulls, from the criminals' bones which lay scattered there" (Life of Christ, p. 416). Where Jewish customs prevailed -- and it is admitted that they did prevail in Jerusalem and Judea at this time, and had for hundreds of years -- a human skull or bone was not allowed to be exposed for even a moment.
