Among the ordinary people of Israel Jesus taught mainly by using parables. Parables are stories with subjects with which the people were familiar, but had a special message and moral.
As one simple example, he talks of God like a good shepherd who owned 100 sheep, but who had lost one of those sheep. He left his 99 sheep, and looked for the other until he found it, and then rejoiced because he had found his lost sheep.
The people of Israel knew well what a shepherd did, and how a good shepherd would look after all his sheep. Therefore, they understood better how God loves everyone and rejoices all the more if someone who rejects God turns back to him in faith.

Generally he taught in Jerusalem, Galilee, and Samaria either in the open or in the temple or synagogues. He also taught in various people's houses, from a boat in the sea, or on mountains - in fact, anywhere he happened to be.
Jesus lived in the area we now call Israel. Most of his teaching was in the north - in Galilee, an area surrounding the Sea of Galilee (or, as it is sometimes called Lake Tiberius). He also spent a little time in Samaria - the region between Galilee in the north and Judah in the south. Finally his other area of teaching was surrounding Jerusalem in the south, the capital of Judah.
