It is called the sermon on the Mount because the location was the Mount(ain) of Olives, which is located close to Jerusalem.

According to Matthew 5:1, "He went up into a mountain."

According to Luke 6:17: "He came down with them, and stood in the plain."
It is not known where Jesus delivered the Sermon on the Mount. It has been speculated that it was possibly given in the Galilee area.

Christian tradition localized the Sermon on the Mount near the place of seven springs--Heptapegon ( Tabgha ) approximately 2 miles west of Capernaum since ancient and modern churches have been built there to commemorate it. Others believe it to have taken place somewhere to the north or northeast of the Sea of Galilee-near Bethsaida.

AnswerThe four beatitudes that Matthew and Luke share are believed to come from the hypothetical 'Q' document, a list of sayings attributed to Jesus and written in the Greek language. While Q provided the two evangelists with the words of those sayings, it do not provide much of the context in which Jesus would have spoken them. As a result, Matthew has Jesus speak them on the mountain, as part of the Sermon on the Mount, while Luke has Jesus speak them on the plain below.

Jesus' words are the words used for the sermon on the mount. Many believe that it is a compilation of several messages delivered by Jesus.
