When forming Led Zeppelin, Jimmy Page approached Keith Moon and John Entwistle and asked them to consider joining the new band he was making...Kieth said, "that would go over like a lead balloon", and John added,"more like a lead zeppelin!". Leshoc: In the time just before Tommy's release, John Entwistle and Keith Moon were planning on leaving The Who and forming a band of their own. When Tommy became a reality and the band's financial prospects were brighter, they abandoned those plans. It was about that time that Page was searching for a name to replace "The New Yardbirds". Keith and John told him of their then dormant project's name "Led Zeppelin".
It is believed that Keith Moon came up with the name. Jimmy Page once said that it described Led Zeppelin perfectly, both heavy and light, in a way.

Led Zeppelin's NameThey got their name from a remark made by The Who drummer, who said after seeing them play " they'll go down like a lead balloon." It was also that they decided to replace balloon with Zeppelin, which they got from the Hindenburg disaster that happened in Lakehurst, New Jersey on May 6th, 1937. NoteLed Zeppelin were a group, not a singer/musician.

Second oppinion: I've heard that plant was talking about getting Keith Moon to be their drummer and some one said "that idea would fall like a led baloon"

Led Zeppelin was a name Jimmy Page had in mind since several years before the group formed. While Page was discussing forming a band with Keith Moon and John Entwistle of The Who, Moon said the idea would go down like a Lead Zeppelin, a play on the phrase "go down like a lead balloon".

Page changed the spelling of "Lead" to "Led" (as in the past tense of the verb "to lead") for commercial reasons.

Led Zeppelin were originally known as the New Yardbirds, after a group that Jimmy Page had previously been in. When deciding on a name, friend Keith Moon (The Who) joked that their music would crash down the charts like "a lead balloon". Page liked the analogy, but changed the phrase to Zeppelin because it was more ironic. They later changed the spelling of lead to prevent "thick americans" from pronouncing it leed. The zeppelin motif was also the inspiration for their first album cover which shows the Hindenburg exploding.

Keith Moon (drums, The Who) made the comment that they were so heavy 'they'd go down like a lead zeppelin.' Then the band's manager, Peter Grant, advised them to spell it Led Zeppelin rather than Lead Zeppelin because he thought people might pronounce it Leed Zeppelin.

Keith Moon or John Entwhistle apparently suggested that a 'supergroup' with Jimmy Page and Jeff Beck in it would go down like a "lead balloon", an idiom for disastrous results..
