As Marie Sklodowska was growing up in Warsaw, the nation of Poland was part of the Russian Empire, and education for Poles was problematic at best. For a female, it was almost impossible. Thus, she was taught the science by her father, graduated with high marks at a gymnasium (the equivalent of an American high school), and later attended the clandestine Flying University.

Sklodowska went to Paris for official college work, and there met and married Pierre Curie. She returned to Warsaw with hopes of getting a PhD, but not one university in Poland would accept a woman doctoral candidate. Marie then returned to the Sorbonne to get her PhD.
