Miami Florida, USA, was officially incorporated as a city on July 28, 1896 with a population of just over 300. It was named for the nearby Miami River, itself named for the Mayaimi Indians who previously lived around Lake Okeechobee.
From the Miami Indian tribe. Thought by anthropologists to be descendants of the Mississippian culture. Miami is named after the Miami River.
A lot of things in Florida are named after native American tribes and of spanish origan...hope that helps

The city of Miami is named after the Mayaimis who were a tribe of Native Americans living around Lake Okeechobee. The group took their name from the lake, which was then called Mayaimi. Mayaimi meant "big water" in the language of the Mayaimis.
