We cannot be entirely sure, but here are some possibilities: 1) he was suffering from ill health. He died only three years after retiring. 2) he had lost his touch. Many of his later plays are thought to be of inferior quality to those he produced in his later middle period, the era of the great tragedies. 3) He was rich enough that he could afford to. 4) When his daughters were getting married, his wife was lonely and wanted him back home.

He didn't "officially" retire. He stopped working in the theatre around 1613. They didn't give him a gold watch or anything, and he did stop by from time to time to see how things were going.
