There's a LOT of information involving the use of essential oils throughout history, but the modern version was developed in the 1930's, when a French chemist burned his hand, and dunked it in a vat of lavender oil. He found that the oil soothed the burn and healed much more quickly than usual, so he started working on the therapeutic benefits of essential oils and published a book. The word aromatherapy was first used in the 1920s by a French chemist Rene Maurice Gattefosse, who stanched his life researching different natural healing properties of essential oils after a lucky accident in his perfume laboratory. As we all know, aromatherapy is a treatment or prevention of disease by use of essential oils.
