Fred Hoyle was a theorist who was working on the opposing view to the Big Bang model, called the Steady State hypothesis. In an attempt to show how ridiculous he believed the premise of the Big Bang theory to be, he coined the term "Big Bang" as an insult to the theory. However, proponents of the theory liked the name, and so adopted it.

Fred Hoyle thought the idea that the Universe burst into existence explosively (like an explosion) a little like a cartoon. Imagine the little red stars with POW written in them that feature on a cartoon screen when someone gets kicked in the shin. He called such anotion 'cartoon physics' and mocked the idea with the term 'Big Bang'. It was first meant mockingly but the name must have seemed quite fun and so stuck. Fred Hoyle was a follower of the now not so popular Steady State Theory which explains his derision.

**************

It is called the "Big Bang" Because it happened very suddenly, like a BANG, and because it was a huge event. The Big bang Actually didn't make a noise at all! Here is some more info on the big bang:

***

It seems confusing that the Big Bang could have happened even though there was no matter or energy in the universe. But really, scientists speculate that there could have been a time before matter, energy, and time itself even existed. The "Big Bang" is a term that describes the event that created the universe. It goes like this:

There was no time, no energy, and no matter. basicly, NOTHING existed. Then, a tiny volume of space, smaller then the head of a pin, suddenly expanded and grew to an enormous size. As the volume of space expanded, it created all the energy and matter in the universe. It created nebulas and galaxies of stars and planets. (and many other things, of coarse.) This is when time began to flow.

There is plenty of evidence to support that this theory is true. The big bang would have been such a huge event that the waves of energy it created are still traveling in space today! People have actually detected these waves with a device called a spectroscope. Not only this, but scientist think that the universe is still expanding. basicly, the Big Bang is still happening today. We know this because astronomers have noticed that the galaxies of our universe are all moving away from eachother. They are all moving away from the centre of the universe, where the big bang started. The universe is still getting bigger to this day.

There is no 'why' for "Why is the origin of the universe is also known as the big bang theory." The Big Bang is just one of many theories and beliefs that our universe had a beginning in SpaceTime. It is just a conceptual abstraction of SpaceTime via people that all existence evolved from some prior causation.

However if the question is meant to ask why is the Big Bang the most popular theoretical model for an inflationary universe, it is because that the Big Bang Theory supports most of the hypothetical conjectures for the origin of our universe, as consistent with the General Theory of Relativity and observations within the small portion of our known (locally observable) universe.

The problem with using the concept of the term Bang in the namesake theory called the Big Bang is that it inadvertently implies an explosive reference. The concept of the Inflationary model of the Universe is to provide an environment in which we can understand its dimensional boundaries. The Big Bang is more a reference to an unfolding evolutionary model of existence in which SpaceTime allows for the integration of positive matter (or an explosion of multiple dimensions from a more singular dimensional containment; i.e. singularity). The Big Bang expresses the understanding of an evolving universe from a one dimensional singularity to the traditional fourth dimensional model of our ever-accelerating universe.

The name was originally invented by opponents of the theory to make fun of it, but then as one may have guessed, the proponents proudly adopted the catchy name.

The term for this theory was invented as a term of derision by one of its opponents, Fred Hoyle. He favored the Steady State Hypothesis, which is now a relic of the past.
