The type of chicken wings known as "Buffalo wings" were created in Buffalo, New York, in 1964 in a restaurant called Frank and Theresa's Anchor Bar, at the corner of Main and North Streets.
Frank and Theresa's son and some friends came in late one night looking for something to eat (although some have suggested that it was for a band that was playing in the bar that night.) All that was left in the kitchen was chicken wings, which Theresa fried up, placed in hot sauce and served to the hungry young men. The wings were a hit and a legendary food was born.
Another version of the story is that the restaurant ran out of food -- and friends of the bartender brought in a batch of chicken wings, which they fried and to which added hot sauce.
Either way, the rest is history.
Well being that I am from buffalo and that the wing was born on my birthday and that I was only 4 blocks of way from the home and birth of the most wonderful fried piece of American cuisine ever to grace the planet.. In 1964 at the home of the wing, a small bar and restaurant called Anchor bar which is located on main st in our downtown district. The first chicken wings were created on Saturday, March 4, 1964 when Teressa Bellissimo, who owned The Anchor Bar with her husband, experimented in the kitchen at the request of her son's hungry friends. Mrs. Bellissimo deep-fried a previously unused part of a chicken, the wing, smothered them in a spicy sauce, and served them with celery and blue cheese. Even her son Dominic was a little apprehensive about testing the unusual dish. His friends loved the chicken wings and returned often to the Anchor Bar to consume Mrs. Bellissimo's delectable new dish. Little did they know they were making food history. Forty five years later, the chicken wing went from a late night experiment born out of desperation to a worldwide culinary phenomenon. America's greatest bar food was born!

A buffalo chopper is also known as a food cutter. It is a commercial machine used to chop meat, vegetables, bread etc. It gets its name because the first food cutters made in the US were made by the Smith Company in Buffalo NY. These machines had both the Smith name and Buffalo, New York cast into the support pieces for the machine. Buffalo was larger and more prominent lettering, hence the name "BUFFALO CHOPPER". Just like Buffalo Wings, no buffalo just the location where they became famous.
