Many prehistoric artefacts from all over the world have been found containing the swastika. The word itself is derived from sanskrit स्वस्तिक and means "bringer of luck". The fascination of German nationalists with the swastika began towards the end of the 19th Century when a number of nationalist groups began adopting it, interpreting it as a germanic rune and symbol of primeval arian wisdom.

During the German "November Revolution" of 1918, flags bearing the swastika were carried by counter-revolutionaries, along with black-white-red flags of the now defunct Kaiserreich.

The swastika was first suggested to the DAP(precursor to the Nazi Party) by Friedrich Krohn, a member of the Teutonic Order and the right-wing, occultist Thule Society in May 1919 in a memo titled "Is the swastika a suitable symbol of the national socialist party?" Krohn suggested an anti-clockwise-facing, angled black swastikain a white circle on red background. According to Buddhist interpretation, this was a talisman of health and happiness.

At the request of Hitler Krohn reversed the swastika, despite Krohn's interpretation that this was a symbol of death and downfall.

The symbol was first used by the Nazis at the inaugural meeting of the Starnberg branch of the NSDAP on 20 May 1920 and officially adopted by the Nazi party on 7 August 1920 at their AGM in Salzburg.
