Muhammad did not write the Qura'n. The Qura'n was written in the Caliphate of Abu Bakr. In Muhammad's lifetime however, all the revelations were written on the likes of camel bones and palm-tree leaves. It was from these sources that all the revelations on Muhammad were compiled and formed into one book; the Qura'n.

*There is a vast difference between the Qura'n and the revelations on Muhammad. The Qura'n was compiled and verified by a group of chosen Sahaba, while the revelations were divine in nature.

The last Prophet of Islam Hazrat Muhammad (SAW) could not read or write. He was not educated in this regards. He did not write any book. The holy Qur'an was revealed to him as Torat was revealed to Hazrat Moses (AS) and The Bible was revealed to Hazrat Jesus Christ (AS).

Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) didn't write the Quran for two main reasons:

  1. Quran was revealed to him by God (Allah in Arabic) through the angel Gabriel. Quran is not man-made text.
  2. Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) didn't learn to read or write. This was for a wisdom by God in order not be tole at some time that prophet Muhammad (PBUH) wrote Quran based on his own readings of other old religious books.

The Quran records those things Muhammad said which he pointed out as being directly inspired by God. Other sayings of Muhammed as well as anecdotal stories about him have been carefully authenticated and collected into collections. These sayings and anecdotes are called hadiths.

Muhammad wrote the Qur'an, given the Almighty Allah's orders. In this, it explains how a Muslim should live, and how he/ she should not. All over the world today, Muslims use this Holy Book as a sort of guide, helping them to live through their life, in hope they will impress the Almighty Allah and be sent off to Paradise.

Islamic theology does not hold that Muhammad wrote anything, as he was illiterate. Regardless of whether you believe the Islamic claim that the Qur'an was revealed by God to Muhammad and he then recited it aloud or you hold that Muhammad himself composed the Qur'an, it was his followers who actually wrote down the orally recited Qur'an.

In both the Islamic Tradition and Secular Historical Research, Muhammad did not actually write down the Qur'an.

Islamic Tradition argues that the angel Gabriel imprinted the Qur'an from God onto Muhammad's soul and then he spoke the words of this revelation. Following that, the Sahaba, or Muhammad's Apostles, wrote it down.

Secular Historical Research (like John Wansbrough) typically argues that the Qur'an was a document that came about from a community of authors around a century after Muhammad was supposed to have lived. In this case, Muhammad was not responsible for writing the Qur'an, because he was not an actual historical personage (or if he was, he was in a much more muted role).

The answer you are looking for is the QUR'AN, but this is actually inaccurate.

According to Muslims, Muhammad did not actually write anything and there are conflicting accounts about whether or not he was illiterate. It is believed that he revealed the Qur'an, but his revelation was oral; he would speak the relevant verses and they memorized until they were written down decades later. There are also the Hadiths and Sira, which detail events in Muhammad's life, but were written down by other people, not Muhammad himself.
