Origins of the English Language
English shares a common ancestor (West Germanic) with German and Dutch. It also has also been influenced by Old Norse, Gaelic, Scots, French, and Latin. Linguists classify it as a Germanic language. The language migrated to England around the removal of Roman troops from south England, as Angle and Saxon warriors moved into and settled in the country.
