the majority of Irish immigrants settled in the major cities of the east coast - this was closer to their point of arrival, and also the source of a great deal of work. most preferred not to work in agriculture as this was deemed to hold the risk of famine and or poverty - the main cause most left Ireland in the first place. as time passed many moved to cities in the midlands and south and to places such as butte Montana but again mostly for mining/industrial work.
Lots of places. About twelve percent of Americans claim Irish ancestory. Massachusetts and New Hampshire are the two states who's largest ethnic population is Irish and Norfolk County which is directly under and to the south west of Boston (Suffolk County) in Massachusetts has the largest Irish population of any county in the US. Perhaps the two cities where major Irish imigration was occuring in the 18th and 19th century were Boston and New York. The majority of laborers on the Erie Canal were Irish. Other major populations included Philadelphia, Chicago, and Baltimore. Basically any city that provided cheap manual labor saw huge increases in Irish Immigration because of the state of Ireland at the time.
Irish immigrants usually settled in New York City. This is because the ships that they came on dropped them off in NYC. Rather than moving somewhere else in the country, they stayed where they were left.
The biggest Irish settlements were New York City, Boston, Philadelphia, Chicago and San Francisco.
