There were (and are) two completely different tribal groups in North America who have been called Blackfoot or Blackfeet; they have no connection with each other.

The Blackfoot Sioux (sihasapa) are a branch of the Teton Lakotas, living in the north-west part of South Dakota between the Sans Arc and the Minneconjou. They spoke the Lakota dialect of Sioux. Today they are mainly found on the Standing Rock and Cheyenne River reservations in South Dakota.

The Blackfoot tribes (siksikakwan) of Montana, Saskatchewan and Alberta formed a strong coalition which included the Piegan, Blood and Blackfoot proper - these are all Algonquian speakers; they had allies in the Sarcis and Gros Ventres, making them the most powerful force on the far northern Plains.

What languages were spoken by the Blackfoot Indians?

There were two different and unrelated tribal groups in North America referred to as "Blackfeet" or "Blackfoot" by white settlers. The larger group lived (and still live) in Alberta, Saskatchewan and northern Montana. These were the Blackfoot confederation, made up of the closely-related Blood, Piegan and Blackfoot tribes. They all spoke an Algonquian language (Siksiká or Blackfoot) very distantly related to the languages spoken in the north-eastern United States.A much smaller group were the Blackfoot Sioux, a division of the Teton Lakotas of the Missouri river in South Dakota. They spoke the Lakota language and today they mainly live at Standing Rock Reservation in South Dakota.Just to show the differences in their respective languages, here are a few words in Algonquian Blackfoot and the equivalent in Blackfoot Lakota:Algonquian Blackfoot ....................
