The modern dog is a descendant of the wolf. Dogs were first domesticated in what is now Manchuria, about 10,000 years ago.
Apart from the physical changes that selective breeding has produced, there have also been behavioral changes; the modern dog's behavior is puppy like even in the mature dog.
