Scientists were making interesting discoveries in the fields of electricity and magnetism, and their relationship. People like Galvani Volta had recently discovered that if you applied a small electrical shock to the severed leg of a frog, it would twitch. While spending a stormy summer in Switzerland, Mary Shelley thought that this would be a phenomenal topic and then used a Horror genre.

Imagine how horrified she would be, now, to discover that her little tale is so remembered, when the poetry of her famous husband Percy Shelley is, except in English Literature classes, utterly forgotten!
