Where did the phrase 'cute as a button' come from?

Answer

Meaning: cute as a button 'quail' The 'button' quail was small, gray & super fluffy.

well, the button started out as the uglyist thing on earth....but then a fairy came down and bestowed upon the button "awsomeness" . now, when the button went to go tell the village people about it, they didn't understand him. However, when the button used the word "awsomeness" it sounder like their word "astamaness" which means cute. so when the little village people grew up they kept saying their word for cute and from then on the name had stuck......
