Jumping jack is a naval term for the person that signals the pilot that the runway is clear and free of obstruction items. The familiar cross arm motion is often combined with the jumping motion to get the pilots attention especially in inclement weather.

Jump, from 1530, perhaps onomatopoeic (bump(?); another theory derives it from words in Gallo-Romance dialects of southwestern France (cf. jumba "to rock, to balance, swing," yumpa"to rock"), picked up during English occupation in Hundred Years War. Superseded native leap, bound, and spring in most senses. Meaning "to attack" is from 1789. Combinant form of 'jack', as a generic name addressed to an unknown stranger, it is attested from 1889 in (American)English. Used especially of sailors. Hence, a 'jumping jack' most probably referring to a sailor in an excited state, i.e. in battle, or more often, enjoying the delights of his shore leave.

Jump shoes, as their name implies, are supposedly an aid for jumping and training. A popular application is in Basketball. The inventor of jump shoes is accredited to Dr. Yoshiro Nakamatsu, a prolific inventor who created such things as the "PyonPyon" which are jumping shoes with springs inside the soles.
