Various harps (ARPA MEXICANA, ARPA JAROCHA), various types of guitars and guitar-like instruments like the large bass GUITARRON, the small rounded-back VIHUELA, the BAJO SEXTO/QUINTO guitar, and there is a certain type of bass drum used in norteno music called the TAMBORA.Guitarron and vihuela are perhaps the "most" Mexican instruments, as the construction of these instruments is very unique to Mexico.
Drums are not a part of the Mariachi ensemble. Typical instruments used are the "violin, guitarrón, guitarra de golpe, vihuela, guitar, trumpet, and occasionally a harp".

The lute is bowl-shaped string instrument, strung in gut The vihuela from Spain is flat-backed and guitar shaped. It is tuned the same as a lute.

The vihuela de mano evolved into the guitar. The sackbut evolved into the trombone. The shawm evolved into the oboe.
